This first volume in the Complete Café Bohemia – Bandstand U.S.A. 1956–58 Radio Broadcasts series documents the Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.

The recordings come from Mutual Network broadcasts made from Café Bohemia in Greenwich Village. The series brings together around 120 minutes of music across three volumes and also preserves the original radio announcements by Guy Wallace and his guests.

The editorial and audio work was built from the best available sources, with source reconstruction, speed and pitch correction, and remastering, in order to present these performances as faithfully as possible to the original broadcasts.

Café Bohemia and Bandstand U.S.A.

Café Bohemia, at 15 Barrow Street in New York’s Greenwich Village, opened in 1955 and quickly became one of the key venues for modern jazz. It was also one of the locations used by the Mutual Network radio programme Bandstand U.S.A..

Miles Davis took part in these broadcasts several times between 1956 and 1958. The GRooVE back Records project also preserves the original announcements and voice-overs, an integral part of the historical and radio document.

Technical note: restoration and remastering

The surviving mono transcriptions of these recordings were not always in optimal condition. To present the complete performances, the best available sources were used, taking into account differences introduced by different technical teams, microphone techniques and recording configurations over a period of three years.

The restoration work includes source reconstruction, speed correction and remastering, while preserving the original radio announcements and voice-overs.
