Now considered a bossa nova classic, Rio After Dark from 1989 was the recording debut of São Paulo singer/guitarist Ana Caram for Chesky Records , a New York label renowned for its high-resolution audiophile recordings. Caram was a student of legendary bossa nova pioneer Antônio Carlos Jobim , who joined his protégée on two of the album's fifteen tracks, playing piano and singing backing vocals on Caram's versions of his classics "Meditation" and " Anos Dourados (It Looks Like December)." Another stellar cameo was by Grammy-winning Cuban-American reed player Paquito D'Rivera , who plays saxophone and clarinet on the tracks "La Cumbia" and "O Que Vier Eu Traço." Accompanied by pianist/composer/producer David Chesky , flutist Steve Sacks , bassist David Finck , and percussionists Carlos Alberto de Oliveira and Café , Caram's sinuous voice and syncopated rhythm proved that she was a fresh and authentic voice, continuing the bossa nova tradition. The album will be reissued on 180g One Step Pressing LP vinyl in September 2025.
