It all began in 1978, when a young composer/musician named David Chesky, just starting his career at Columbia Records, became frustrated with the lack of artistic control his position afforded him. He asked his business partner and younger brother, Norman, if they thought it would be wise to start their own record label. But what did these two young men, having moved from Miami to New York at an early age, know about business? Frankly, not much. But what the brothers may have lacked in business acumen, they made up for with a burning passion for creating great music and great sound, and a desire to invent new and exciting ways to capture and reproduce music.
