Unique among Zingarelli's symphonies, composed in three movements and in a Central European style, are the Milanese Symphonies, so named by American musicologist Rey Longyear because of their current location (the Milan Conservatory). Composed in the 1980s, the Symphonies reflect the stylistic changes of the time with their dramatic use of the minor mode, imbued with new and powerful expressive meanings, after decades of predominantly using the major mode.
