Ferenc Fricsay brings together two contrasting works by Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring and the Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, the latter with Monique Haas at the piano. Both recordings were made in Berlin with the RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester.

Recordings

The Capriccio with Monique Haas was recorded at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin on 27 September 1950; The Rite of Spring was recorded at the same venue from 11 to 13 March 1954.

Fricsay, Haas and Stravinsky

Fricsay combines rhythmic precision with transparent orchestral textures; in the Capriccio, Monique Haas brings clarity and incisiveness to Stravinsky’s piano writing.

Original label and production

Both interpretations belong to the historical Deutsche Grammophon catalogue. For The Rite of Spring, Wolfgang Lohse is documented as producer and Karl-Heinz Westphal as balance engineer.

What are DSD and DXD?

DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is a 1-bit digital encoding system based on pulse-density modulation. DSD64 operates at approximately 2.8 MHz, DSD128 at approximately 5.6 MHz, and DSD256 at approximately 11.2 MHz. Playback requires a DAC or player compatible with the selected DSD rate.

DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) is a very high-resolution PCM format; in the version offered here it operates at 352.8kHz. Originally developed also as a professional editing and post-production environment for very high-resolution workflows, it requires a compatible DAC or player.
