Stokowski Edition, Vol. 5

This volume of the Stokowski Edition brings together some of the most celebrated orchestral works from the classical repertoire, performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the visionary direction of Leopold Stokowski. The album opens with Bach's monumental Toccata and Fugue in D minor , dramatically transcribed for orchestra by Stokowski himself. Masterpieces of late Romanticism and orchestral impressionism follow, including Dukas's The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain , both characterized by vivid color and dynamic tension. Two Italian and French pieces close the collection: Ponchielli's celebrated Dance of the Hours and Bizet's suite L'Arlésienne .
