Martinon: Saint-Saëns & Dvořák — “Urbs Roma” & “From the New World”

Jean Martinon pairs Camille Saint-Saëns’s Symphony in F major “Urbs Roma” with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 “From the New World”. The programme contrasts the monumental construction of Saint-Saëns’s youthful symphony with the melodic and dramatic profile of Dvořák’s Ninth, presenting two different sides of Martinon’s symphonic repertoire.

Recordings

Urbs Roma is performed by the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française; Dvořák’s Ninth by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The digital reissue bringing together the two interpretations was remastered in 2022.

What are DSD and DXD?

DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is a 1-bit digital encoding system based on pulse-density modulation. DSD64 operates at approximately 2.8 MHz, DSD128 at approximately 5.6 MHz, and DSD256 at approximately 11.2 MHz. Playback requires a DAC or player compatible with the selected DSD rate.

DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) is a very high-resolution PCM format; in the version offered here it operates at 352.8kHz. It was also developed as a professional editing and post-production environment for very high-resolution workflows and requires a compatible DAC or player.
