Paul Paray conducts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in two masterpieces of the twentieth-century symphonic and orchestral repertoire: Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 and Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Orchestral Suite No. 2. These historic Detroit recordings date from 1959 and 1961, during the central years of Paray’s collaboration with the orchestra.

Recordings

Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 was recorded on 17 January 1959 at Ford Auditorium, Detroit. Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2 was recorded on 11 March 1961 at Cass Technical High School, Detroit.

What are DSD and DXD?

DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is a 1-bit digital encoding system based on pulse-density modulation. DSD64 operates at about 2.8 MHz, DSD128 at about 5.6 MHz and DSD256 at about 11.2 MHz. Playback requires a DAC or player compatible with the selected DSD rate.

DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) is an ultra-high-resolution PCM format; in the version offered it operates at 352.8kHz. Developed also as a professional editing and post-production environment for ultra-high-resolution work, it requires a compatible DAC or player.
