Dimitri Mitropoulos conducts two contrasting Fifth Symphonies: Beethoven’s in C minor, Op. 67 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Mendelssohn’s in D major, Op. 107 “Reformation” with the WDR Symphony Orchestra.

The programme contrasts Beethoven’s dramatic tension and motivic construction with Mendelssohn’s different balance of symphonic drive, solemnity and orchestral transparency.

The two works reveal two sides of Mitropoulos’s symphonic repertoire.
