Valerie Joyce, born in Japan and now living in Seattle, recorded two albums for Chesky Records in the 2000s. The first of these was the acclaimed "New York Blue," first released in 2005. The recording was made at St. Peter's Church in Chelsea under the direction of sound engineer Nicholas Prout and featured the young singer accompanied by a top-notch jazz band: pianist Andy Ezrin, bassists John Hebert and Tim Lefebvre, and drummer Gene Jackson. On some tracks, the ensemble is rounded out by the smoky saxophone of veteran Lawrence Feldman. Joyce's charming repertoire blends skilled interpretations of famous Great American Songbook evergreens ("Darn That Dream") with jazz standards (Miles Davis' "Blue in Green"), jazz-tinged r&b tunes ("Fever"), rock (Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"), and pop (The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers"). Evolution Music offers an excellent reissue of this interesting album in a One Step version obtained from the original masters, cut at 33 rpm and pressed on 180g high-quality vinyl.
