Dopo otto album per diverse etichette, la newyorkese Alexis Cole è entrata a far parte della Chesky Records, specializzata in musica audiofila, nel 2014 per "A Kiss In The Dark", che ha messo in mostra l'innovativa tecnica di registrazione binaurale dell'azienda. Riprendendo Cole e la sua band (il chitarrista Saul Rubin, il sassofonista e clarinettista Dan Block, il bassista Pat O'Leary e il batterista Phil Stewart) dal vivo con un singolo microfono ad alta risoluzione, "A Kiss In The Dark" ha visto la cantante dalla voce vellutata immergersi profondamente nella storia del jazz antico, dando un tocco contemporaneo a brani principalmente della fine degli anni '10 e dell'inizio degli anni '20.
