ALBAN BERG
Edited by Ettore Napoli
In 1975, Mosco Carner (Mosco Cohen) published Alban Berg: The Man and The Work, which immediately established itself as one of the most comprehensive biographies on the composer of Wozzeck and the unfinished Lulu. A second edition was published in 1983, in which Carner focused on that finally completed Third Act with the musicological analyticity and cultural breadth that are characteristic of it, as his previous and still unsurpassed biography of Puccini attests (a third edition, 1992, is still unpublished in Italy). Carner sought a musically documented, but never mechanical, connection between the man and the artist: his primary goal is to balance the biographical-existential and the creative-expressive planes, two different levels of a single reality: that of an artist who entrusts his conception of life and art to music.
Even in the second part, where the compositions are approached individually by genesis and compositional practice, Carner consistently maintains a direct connection with the reader, using the colloquial yet scholarly style typical of the best Anglo-Saxon essays. The reader thus finds a lively connection to the personal and artistic experiences of one of the most brilliant figures in the history of twentieth-century music, a story about which Carner drew information directly from those who knew him.
