A master of the strings, Al Di Meola, abandoning the overly ambitious dexterity of "Elegant Gypsy" to focus more on musical substance, demonstrates his intense work on the material on his next album, "Casino." For example, "Egyptian Danza," an amalgam of intertwined melodies evokes the contrasting worlds of East, West, and the New World with light electronics. A much clearer sound is evoked in "Chasin' The Voodoo," which intensifies into an extremely compact, continuous fire, permeated by the maestro's familiar guitar sound. Di Meola—alone with himself—combines the idea of ​​rhythms and multiple parts: in "Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars," four miniatures with percussive zapateado and swirling flamenco, he accompanies himself using multitracking. All great, but the best comes at last: in the lengthy lead track "Casino" all forces come together to create a magnificent performance with shifting rhythms, layered patterns, deceptive meter changes and, of course, top-notch guitar playing.
