GP Telemann, a musician with an inexhaustible creative streak and perhaps unmatched in the breadth of his oeuvre, belongs to the dawning phases of the Enlightenment. J.M. Böhm was as skilled on the violin as he was on the flute and oboe; J.F. Fasch (1688-1758) was a highly industrious musical craftsman, though reluctant to publish his work, which appeared posthumously. The embarrassment that some commentators feel about the music on this album is primarily due to their unfamiliarity with this music, informed by a sonic "individualism" and a systematic spirit, albeit one that was still little inclined to the rigid regularities that perhaps only the late-Romantic school imposed on musical perception.
