The compositions presented in this cd are an overexciting confirmation of the quality of Maestro Gaslini, always appreciated in an artist whose style is above any critical reserve, and in whose catalogue minor works don’t exist. The works that here we listen to are also something more : they are great intellectual conceptions which aim to the construction of a “macroform”. In Sinfonia breve for orchestra, the opening incipit is yet a shock: the harsh irruption of the sound, the oxymoron between the fanfare blare and the mysterious aura of which sonority Gaslini seems to possess the exclusive secret, together they lead us to a path dense of dramatic moments and unforeseen turning points, through the unwinding of twelve sequentiae to which the composer asks the deepest meaning, of that scansion of time and nature that are the Four Season. They are explicity declared not on the front section but inside: the Spring in the third sequence, the Summer in the seventh, the Autumn in the tenth, the Winter in the twelfth and last, perhaps announcing a thin and resistant bond between Gaslini’s Largo ( preceded by a cadence dense of tension) and Vivaldi’s Lento . Naturalmente is a triptych that unites ( effortlessly, in fact “naturaliter” and “iuxta naturam” ) three works close in time, born in a biennium. Beyond the river (2007), score for flute and ten instruments that strikes us for the composer miraculous ability in analyzing and melting sounds, themes and tunes with swift and elusive metamorphosis, opens with a fascinating archaism: the enunciation of the late medieval melody known in Italy as Lamento di Tristano, soon dressed in changing colours, brought back to its nudity, then rewrapped in polychromatic dressing. The triptych central section, Ter (2008), for soprano voice, violin, viola and clarinet, develops into three lyrics based on the clear verses by Umbrian poetess Daniela Margheriti : “Da secoli sopporto”, “E penso al mio riposo”, “Ecco che arrivo al bosco”. The conclusive section, Il bosco di Beuys (2008), has a sung text, taken from a Marco Bagnoli’s interview to the sculptor and painter Joseph Beuys . The organic chosen for Il bosco di Beuys is : baritone voice, little female chorus, clarinet, cello, piano, percussion. The level of word transfiguration reached by Gaslini through very original sonority in his work, explains to us the great emotion this composition caused since its first execution. The first absolute execution of Silver Concert (1992), which took place at Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, in 1992, during the tenth World Sax Festival, is that one which, in this cd, offers us the rare “concerto per saxofono, baritono e orchestra”, in which the dialectic between jazz tradition and classical -romantic tradition is confronted with Gaslini’s poetical style : by a sublimation of respective characteristics. The Elizabethan Suite, for traversiere flute, voice and piano, is a tribute to British Court composers during Tudor age. The cd concludes with a bright page for sixteen string instruments : Adagio is beautiful, here live recorded and directed by Gaslini himself, in Lanciano, in 1999.
