The two Petites Suites by Jeremy Norris, recorded here for the first time, explore musical regions that are familiar to us but are rarely visited by contemporary composers. They are soundscapes that comfortably nestle between the exciting extemporaneity of jazz and the assured mastery of classical music. Despite its twofold heritage, Norris’ musical language is not without surprises, being rich in jazz inspired polyphony and virtuosic outbursts in the complex ensemble writing and solo cadenzas. Yet there is also an immediacy and freshness in the suites’ melodies that expresses itself in a catchiness that Ennio Morricone has attributed to music that reminds us of sounds and motives perhaps heard elsewhere but impossible to define. The suites are dedicated to two great musicians: Giusto Pio and Claude Bolling. Without their advice, encouragement and above all the example of their compositions, the suites could not have been conceived let alone composed.
