Piano writing between composition, transcription and restitution. The path proposed by Kostandin Tashko in the name of the Russian musical tradition unfolds along a path that, although traced within the twentieth-century context, tends to look back nostalgically at a past with vaguely defined contours, between Medtner's dreamlike late romanticism, Tchaikovsky's fairy-tale and Stravinsky's ancestral. At the age of two. It was 1963.
For as long as I can remember, I've always loved listening to records. Certainly because of my family history, with my father being an illustrious classical pianist and refined composer, and my mother an opera singer.
But certainly in those years of early childhood I was greatly fascinated by those big black pans that spun on the old family record player and from which emerged my favorite fairy tales, narrated by the great voices of great actors (I remember, for example, Nando Gazzolo and his Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Grethel, and Tom Thumb, whose records I literally wore out...).
Around the age of eight or nine, the transition from fairy tales to the Beatles' 45s at the end of their career (Obladì, Obladà), or to that unusual and unknown sound of the Theremin used in Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys, was a completely natural occurrence.
And when at 13 I gradually began to discover Santana, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.etc.etc., combined with reading Suono and Stereoplay, it was equally natural to become infatuated with the images of the large reel-to-reel tape recorders of the time, suitable for the then rare home studios.
My first love, much dreamed of but never owned, was the Tascam 80-8, eight tracks on half-inch tape. And my dream microphones were Sennheisers, MD441s, and MD421s... But the real dream was to "build my own studio"... which would remain just a dream for a long time. When I finally, at 19, discovered Jim Croce's music and understood that... "It-Can-Be-Done!" (quote), it was the moment when it became clear to me that sooner or later, I would do that job, I would "make records."
And the rest is history...

My culture, my tradition, my fundamental experiences are ANALOGUE. This important training and didactic activity saw him as a protagonist at the "Cesare Pollini" Conservatory of Music in Padua for over 30 years: a conservatory that he also led with tenacity and stubbornness in the last 10 years of his life, before his premature death on April 24, 1996.

The flute is a very important and highly regarded instrument within the body of Adriano Lincetto's compositions. And a significant reason, perhaps the most important, leads us to refer to the primary inspirational source of the Paduan Master, which underlies all his compositions: his closeness to the performers.
It is well known, as the great Radu Lidijenko also highlights in his critical writings on the Master from Padua, that Lincetto undoubtedly wrote because he "could not not write": his was a primary need of his being an artist; but then, equally, writing for him also meant "giving" his music to his friends, or to his son Francesco, who, as it happens, was an excellent flutist. In this regard, it cannot be forgotten that a significant part of Adriano Lincetto's concert career as a pianist developed in the formation of the chamber duo with flute, with Enzo Caroli, in the 70s and 80s.
Therefore, most of the compositions on this album are written, conceived, and dedicated to these important... friends.

It is always difficult to talk about the compositional style of a distinctly independent author from the second half of the 20th century, free from the dictates of "schools" ("of the regime," allow me to add with a deliberate polemical spirit...). It is difficult because a sensitive and deeply cultured person cannot help but be influenced by the layers of a thousand and more years of previous musical literature. And this consciously, but certainly even more unconsciously.
It is therefore a daunting task for the "good critic" to try to identify and isolate these sources of inspiration. Lincetto was certainly enamored of the radical innovation brought to the world of music by two great revolutionaries such as Debussy and Stravinsky, whose manners and customs Lincetto sometimes quotes. But he was not insensitive either to the synthesizing ability of the great popular music of Eastern Europe achieved by authors like Bartok or Prokofiev.
Adriano Lincetto is certainly a child of the 20th century (although a fundamental composition for string orchestra from 1980, significantly titled "Suite per Paer," cannot be forgotten).
Delving further into detail, it is very interesting to note a strong need to communicate his vision of the notes written on the staff to the performer, even using words: the definitions of the individual movements and the agogic indications throughout the score are always illuminating and, I would say, striking. Taking the Sonata for flute and piano as a paradigmatic example, we can and must note the titles of the movements: Allegro spigliato, Andante elegiaco, Allegro ironico e grottesco. There is always an adjective to the classic definitions: very precise adjectives, which make the sensitive performer perceive the author's almost desperate need for his music to be fully understood. The latter created his splendid graphic album titled Jazz, featuring works of rare beauty, complemented by reflections on art and the creative process, inspired by the new music from overseas. Matisse wrote in the album, drawing inspiration from the observant spontaneity of jazz: "The artist must bring all his energy, his sincerity, and the greatest modesty to avoid cliché in his work."

Why revive those pieces today? Perhaps because they have retained their freshness and communicative tension, despite no longer being able to shake up perceptual habits as forcefully as they did in the early twentieth century. Because, despite their apparent simplicity, they conceal refinement and a great variety of timbral textures, colors, and nuances. Many musicians developing an innovative approach today intelligently draw on those timbral experiences, on spontaneous polyphony, aptly defined as heterophony by some scholars, which transcends the individual soloist to reinvigorate collective improvisation. In general, because of the stimulation this music still has.

The Tiger Dixie Band brings together distinguished soloists from the Triveneto region, a region with a nearly twenty-year history. At times, the band has sought a forward-thinking approach, recording with musicians like Markus Stockhausen and infusing a contemporary sensibility into its performances. At the same time, however, the band has strived to maintain a rigor faithful to the original model. The balance between the two components imbues the offering with a sense of purpose and makes it enjoyable and contemporary. The soloists have metabolized that language through years of practice and immersed it in their own contemporary sensibility, achieving a fluid interpretation, rich in nuance and subtle humor.

With this background, the band approached this early classical repertoire, adhering philologically to those compositions and infusing them with new vitality. The strong interplay between the wind instruments in the front line is prominent: trumpet, clarinet, and trombone, in the New Orleans tradition, joined by tenor saxophone. Throughout many tracks, one hears the perfect distribution of parts, treated in spontaneous counterpoint, from the opening "Original Dixieland One-Step" to "China Boy," from "Davenport Blues" to "Bill Bailey," which conceals within itself, with delightful humor, "Stormy Weather" and "La Vie en Rose." The same attention is evident in the arrangements, which cover famous songs and make improvisation a precious resource.

Sasha Mashin | HAPPY RUN (BBR2023SM01)

Available in: CD, Tape, FILE HD 96kHz • 24bit

Tracks

Country of Obscurantism (Sasha Mashin) 09:11

Yellow Blues (Makar Novikov) 08:29

Hey it's Spring (Igor Stravinsky) 06:44

Darn the Dream (Jimmy Van Heusen) 06:06

Suite et Poursuite (Rosario Giuliani) 16:17

Line up

Sasha Mashin | drums
Rosario Giuliani| alto sax
Makar Novikov | double bass

Credits

Produced by Sasha Mashin | SMASHIN PRODUCTION
Executive Producer: Lorenzo Vella | BIRDBOX RECORDS
Recorded at Saint Louis College of Music (Roma)
Recording/mixing engineer: Sasha Mashin
Mastering engineer: Lorenzo Vella
Cover photo: Lorenzo Vella | NIGHTINGALE STUDIOS
Additional photos: Alessio Cesario, Ira Polyarnaya
Graphics: Nerina Fernandez

Description

Sasha Mashin - Happy Run
Sasha Mashin's new and first Italian album, titled "Happy Run," features two extraordinary artists, saxophonist Rosario Giuliani and double bassist Makar Novikov.

Mashin, a Russian drummer, chose Italy and Rome as his place of residence for the past two years after the outbreak of the conflict involving his country. Sasha Mashin lived in Moscow, where he played a leading role in the city's cultural and musical scene. Two activities in particular occupied much of his time: "Sasha Mashin Happy Lab," which took place once a week at Moscow's main jazz club, and 'Sasha Mashin Happy Run,' where friends would meet to run 10 kilometers and chat once a week. The idea behind the musical workshop was to break down the barrier between the audience and the stage, promoting informal communication, concerts, and the exchange of ideas. In a short time, the lab became a regular event for listening to great music and a meeting place for creatives who shared ideas and started new projects. Similarly, the amateur sports event became popular, with many of the same participants as the "Happy Lab." The rules were simple: as long as you run, you can learn anything you want, not only from the event's creator, Mashin himself, but also from all the musicians or people involved in the 10-kilometer run, who came from various professional backgrounds. The outbreak of the war profoundly changed the dynamics, not only on an international scale but also, and above all, in the lives of individuals. Sasha Mashin continued to "run," not only metaphorically. Arriving in Italy as a political refugee, he found new friends, exceptional musicians who welcomed him both as a person and as an artist. Today, the Russian drummer feels he can call Rome his "home" and his new and old friends "his family."

“I feel like I've finally finished my race," explains Sasha Mashin in the liner notes of his album, "for the first time in a long time I feel truly happy. While once the idea of emigrating filled me with existential terror, it doesn't even feel like I've left home. Italians are so open, friendly, and supportive that it feels like I've completed a marathon and reached the finish line. I'm home.” The songs on the "Happy Run" album are composed by Sasha Mashin himself. "Country of Obscurantism" suggests that it doesn't necessarily have to be beautiful, which helps the artist share it with a lighter heart. "I promise I will continue my attempts and maybe one day I will write something more beautiful with a more joyful background." The album includes Makar Novikov's beautiful composition "Yellow Blues," Rosario Giuliani's magnificent three-part "Suite et Poursuite," Jimmy Van Heusen's ballad "Darn That Dream," and even a track from "The Rite of Spring" by the artist's most beloved composer, Igor Stravinsky ("Introduction, Les Augures printaniers"), paired with Victor Lewis's composition "Hey, It's Me You Are Talkin' To" (music the artist is convinced was inspired by Stravinsky himself). "One of the most beautiful experiences related to running," says Sasha, "is the ability to think and plan while running. In these moments, the brain's chemistry changes significantly, producing more serotonin and dopamine, and you can think more clearly and precisely. By running regularly, I understood one important thing: you cannot run away from yourself. But you can run away from the darkness, both within and outside of us. Running is an intelligent sport. Run happy!”

"Happy Run" is an album that is not just about music but also tells a story. By choice, he has avoided the glare of the major circuits and competitions, pursuing a long and painstaking personal research, dedicating much of his energy to documenting his work on disc. These recordings have always met with widespread popular acclaim. From Albeniz to Stravinsky, from Chopin to Busoni, from Lincetto to Grieg, his remarkable ability to enter the most diverse environments has often been highlighted by highly favorable reviews from Italy's most illustrious critics, from Riccardo Risaliti to Piero Rattalino to Angelo Foletto. With this collection of captivating and distinctly romantic pieces by the great Norwegian composer, Alberto Boischio celebrates his fortieth birthday and the tenth year of his collaboration with Velut Luna. Two important and noteworthy milestones. The recording, as always performed by Marco Lincetto using a Steinway & Sons D274 Concert Grand piano, offers the great sound quality now known to all enthusiasts.

I SOLISTI DI PAVIA: SHOSTAKOVICH, STRAVINSKY, FRANCAIX (CVLD126)

Author: SHOSTAKOVICH, STRAVINSKY, FRANCAIX
Performer: I SOLISTI DI PAVIA, ENRICO DINDO

Available in: CD, File CD

Tracks

01 - Chamber Symphony in C Minor, Op. 110a: I. Lalo's Symphonie espagnole shines in the first five tracks thanks to the lyrical virtuosity of Alfredo Campoli, who blends elegance and momentum in a compelling dialogue with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The atmosphere becomes more Nordic with Sibelius's En Saga, where the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra evokes vast and mysterious landscapes. Finally, Stravinsky's leap into modernism with The Rite of Spring reveals a rhythmic tension and primal energy, sculpted with precision and vigor, concluding a musical journey of astonishing breadth.

The Symphonies V ( CBH619 )

Composer : Igor Stravinsky

Conductor : Ferenc Fricsay

Orchestra : RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin *, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra**

Traces

01 - The Rite of Spring, I. The RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin interprets Le Rite du Printemps with primal energy, conveying the telluric force of pagan dances and the dramatic tension of sacrifice in a reading that combines rigor and impetus.
